Amahl
was written by Gian Carlo Menotti and was originally performed live on
television by the NBC Opera Theatre on December 24th,
1951, becoming the debut performance of the
Hallmark Hall of Fame.
It is the story of a young disabled boy, who tends
to tell tall tales, and his impoverished mother who is not always inclined to
believe him.
One night there is a great light from a bright star,
followed by Three Kings who are bringing their riches to the Christ Child.
When
Amahl tries to
defend his mother for the attempted theft of the treasure to help her own son,
he has only his crutch to offer the Holy Child.
When he does this, the Three Kings, now witness the
miracle of the boy’s leg being healed and they complete the journey together.
