Forecast calls for 'Rain' in Fall River
Gene Kelly has passed
away, but his classic film moment, tap-splashing his way through a
downpour and "Singin' in the Rain" surely is immortal.
The Little Theatre of
Fall River aims to recapture that magic as it presents "Singin' in the
Rain," the classic MGM musical about Hollywood in the 1920s, to open its
63rd season. The show will be presented at 8 p.m. tonight through Saturday
and at 2 p.m. Sunday.
Performances will be
given in the Arts Center at Bristol Community College on Elsbree Street in
Fall River.
"Singin' in the Rain" is an all-singing, all-dancing entertainment about
Hollywood as silent pictures are giving way to the "talkies." This
light-hearted spoof of depicts a frantic Hollywood as the introduction of
sound changes all the movie-making rules. The show, following Monumental
Studios' preparation for its romantic epic, "The Dueling Cavaliers,"
includes some of America's best-loved comedy routines, dance numbers and
love ballads.
The stage musical is based on the MGM film which starred Gene Kelly,
Donald O'Connor and Debbie Reynolds. The screenplay and adaptation is by
Betty Comden and Adolph Green, with songs by Nacio Brown and Arthur Freed.
The Little
Theatre production is co-directed by Jeff Belanger and Janice MacDonald,
with Michael Coury and Ms. MacDonald as choreographers. Jane Fiore Bigelow
is musical director of the show.
"Singin' in the Rain" is
the first Little Theatre show to mix film and live action, as well as a
torrential storm onstage.
"It's an all-consuming
thought," said director Belanger, who admits "Singin' in the Rain" is one
of his favorite movie musicals. "It's the combination of the comedy and
the dance" that makes the show so special.
Co-director MacDonald
agrees that "Singin' in the Rain" evokes images of magic for people. "It's
the way you want to remember Hollywood," she said.
Included in the cast of
more than 55 are Michael Coury as Don Lockwood, Jaimie Raposa as Kathy
Selden, John Dias as Cosmo Brown, and Dee Kullander as Lina Lamont.
Supporting cast members include Bruce Kullander as R.F. Simpson and Jerry
Goldberg as Roscoe Dexter.
