The Story

David Mamet, one of America’s foremost modern playwrights of Glengary Glen Ross fame, crafts this suspenseful and controversial play. A college student drops by her professor’s  office, allegedly to clarify class notes.  During two subsequent meetings, their discussion evolves, entrapping both parties in confusion, hurt and fear.  Oleanna explores current societal Time Bombs , such as “political correctness” and “sexual harassment” as they explode in lethal consequences for both professor and student. Who is at fault?.

The Director's Notes

“There can be no tougher or unflinching play .. it’s dramatic ice.”  Harold Pinter

Communication, or the lack thereof, fuels the struggle in Oleanna. Set in a male college professor’s office, a female student struggles to understand, to learn. But who is learning? Who is teaching?  When words, our most valued and cherished vehicles to “Truth”, turn into weapons, the towers of power and tradition tumble down.  Sexual harassment and political correctness clash and explode in a sea of misunderstanding.  Is she right? Is he right? Come to witness. Decide.

“Experiencing Mamet’s Oleanna was one of the most stimulating experiences I’ve  ever had in theatre. In two acts, he succeeded in enraging all of the audience, first the women, then the men”. Roger Ebert. Chicago Sun-Times
